Why is this field/column not numeric? It would appear to make sense to be able to sum this column similar to the My C Net Won column.

I don't know why that decision was made specifically, although in the overview reports that makes more sense.
It should be possible to build a custom version of that stat to display the totals, but let's see what the devs say first - it may be possible to change the way that the built in stat behaves.

That Buy-in field is a description of the level of tournament you are playing. It is similar to the "$1 NL" designations of the cash world. The specific numbers are not there for your to treat as an accounting value, but rather it is a description of your level of play.

However, you can make a stat that behaves as a numeric with the same data. You want to be able to see the total amount of your buy-ins before profits? Or do you want to see the "My C" data in game currency?

The Statistics reports are meant to display your statistics and are not intended to be results oriented. As Tarix stated, under the Statistics tab the "Buy-In" is representative of the "level" such as $2NL would represent for a cash game.

The Results report is meant to display your results and aggregated winnings therefore if you look at your Results -> Overview page, you will see that 'My C Buy-In' is numeric as you would expect and can be summed to represent your total amount of buy-ins.
